An Ohio Proctologist on Why He Became a Comedian: ‘Laughter Is the Best Medicine’

No one is more qualified to tell a fart joke than a proctologist.

But that’s exactly what inspired one Springfield proctologist to get into comedy, telling the Springfield News-Sun, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Dr. Darin Green has been looking into people’s bodies for 25 years, and earlier this summer, he held his first comedy show at the Courtyard Marriott in downtown Springfield, which was attended by some 300 people.

Green, who specializes in rectal surgery, explained to the Springfield News-Sun that he became a proctologist because “it involved doing procedures, which I enjoy, as well as seeing patients in the office.”

Green also said that his chosen field helped him become a better comedian, saying, “proctology [sic] gives me an endless supply of comedy and jokes.” Green loves to put his patients at ease by starting off with a few “fart and poop jokes” before getting into the more serious health stuff. He said his favorite comedian is Carrot Top, though he admires Dave Chappelle as well.

I guess to be a proctologist, you need to have a sense of humor, but hearing “I love making people laugh” isn’t something you’d want someone to say when you have your pants around your ankles.
