Will ‘Progress Bars’ Inspire People to Read More? Probably Not

They gamified reading.

Reading can be boring. You have to sit still for hours on end, there are no sounds to be heard, no flashing lights to be seen and very few scantily clad women — unless, of course, you’re using your imagination. The problem with people today is that they aren’t reading and study after study has confirmed this.

So how do we solve it? For one book publisher, it’s simple: progress bars.

An Apple employee named Luca Bernardi posted a picture on X of a book he’s reading that features a digital-style progress bar at the top of each page. It’s a novel idea (sorry), and Bernardi claims he “kinda love[s] it.” In the screenshot, you can see that Bernardi is on the 22nd page of what appears to be a book about AI, judging by all the AI terminology.

Which, I don’t know if most people have never held a book, but they already have progress bars already built in, they’re called pages!
