U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials last week blocked all U.S. imports of spices coming from PT Natural Java Spice in Indonesia after trace amounts of the radioactive isotope cesium 137 were found in shipments containing cloves.
It’s the second time this year that shipments from Indonesia have contained radioactive contamination. While it’s unclear where exactly the contamination is coming from as the facilities that processed the contaminated shrimp and the cloves are roughly 500 miles apart, the FDA assured consumers that none of the radioactive products have reached U.S. shelves.
Possible radioactive contamination was detected in cloves from Indonesia after finding the same isotope in shrimp, which prompted a recall.https://t.co/Ep3yj4zgLGpic.twitter.com/SpSTTdIr86
