A man has been arrested after he threw himself off a Royal Caribbean ship this past week in a sorry attempt to avoid paying a $16,000 gambling he accrued while on a weeklong vacation at sea.

The man, whose name is Jey Gonzalez-Diaz, jumped ship during a routine inspection conducted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection after his Royal Caribbean cruise returned to port. According to surveillance video, Gonzalez-Diaz was pulled out of the water and whisked away by a man on a Jet Ski, in what was clearly a planned getaway.

Sadly, his plan was foiled when he was later taken into custody by CBP agents who found him inside the Puerto Rico Capitol Building. According to TMZ, at the time of his arrest, Gonzalez-Diaz was in “possession of $14,600 in cash, two phones and five IDs.”

Royal Caribbean told authorities that Gonzalez-Diaz owed them $16,710.24 in unpaid gambling debts. Sadly, on top of his losses, he’s also facing felony charges for not properly reporting the $14,000 in cash later found on his person.
