San Franciscans Are Now ‘Networking’ in Saunas

Hey, that’s how my uncle met his “roommate”!

If you thought San Francisco couldn’t get any more, well, San Francisco, think again. The Wall Street Journal reports that people in the city are having meetings and “getting to know other founders” by going to bathhouses.

No, these aren’t the bathhouses of ‘70s New York. These are upscale wellness spots where a single session can run you $50. Once inside, guests sweat, relax and center themselves — before getting down to brass tacks and discussing how we can increase revenue in Q4.

Even though you can’t bring your laptop into the steam room, WSJ says that business dealings in these areas are becoming more common. There are meetings that happen in the sauna, and some companies have also started to organize company-wide cold plunges — just in case you wanted to know what your hairy old boss looks like with rock-hard nips.

For those who aren’t doing business, they still see “emptying their wallet to enter a steamroom” as a positive social experience.

“You’re not the journalist and the lawyer and the teacher and the garbageman and the politician in there. You’re just you,” one person interviewed for the piece explained. “You’re minimally clothed. And your iPhone batteries don’t work in there for very long.”

If you’re looking for a job, you might want to try heading to your local bathhouse and making conversation. Just be aware that you might get offered a different kind of job.
