Scientists from the University of Exeter recently conducted an experiment where they placed a closed Tupperware box of potato chips on the ground near a group of herring gulls to entice the birds. When the birds attempted to eat the chips, the researchers shouted them away.
The study was repeated across nine separate seaside towns in Cornwall. In total, 61 seagulls were accosted when they attempted to open the Tupperware containing chips. Their findings concluded that 15% of seagulls flew away when confronted with a male’s voice, while the rest simply walked away.
Aggressive seagulls have long terrorised British holidaymakers at the seaside. Now, animal behaviourists say they have discovered the best way to tackle the feathery bandits: shout at them.

Dr. Boogert, one of the researchers, said seagulls are often vilified, as most don’t have the confidence to steal food directly from people. However, if you come across an especially hungry and bold bird, shouting is the best way to scare them away.
No duh!
