Subversive African Electronic Musician Revealed to Be Middle-Aged White Dude from France

You just can’t be doing that.

Experimental electronic musician African Imperial Wizard has built a following for blending African musical samples with striking regional imagery. At performances, he wears the infamous pointed robe, which has been covered in traditional patterns in order to (apparently) make an artistic statement.

That’s all well and good. The problem? He’s actually just a dude from France.

In a post on Instagram, experimental rock group Xiu Xiu revealed that “African Imperial Wizard” is just a random white dude from Western Europe, not an Angolan representative of the “pan-African armed struggle” as he previously claimed.

“[He] obscures his white identity to the extent that he even wears gloves to cover his hands all while projecting a pastiche of Black African ‘tribal’ imagery on screen,” the band noted in their Instagram post.

It turns out, African Imperial Wizard has been doing this for some time. The man’s social media is filled with posts talking about African issues using the word “we,” even making posts saying things like “Our darkest voodoo rituals call on the spirits of our ancestors to guide and protect our warriors in our fight against colonialism.” Brother, your ancestors were the ones doing colonialism!

African Imperial Wizard has since made his Instagram account private, but you can still see all the embarrassing trails of his deceit through posts made via his (German) record label. One name that keeps coming up as a collaborator is “Andrew Claristidge,” a French electronic music producer — though it’s unclear if Claristidge is African Imperial Wizard or just an associate.

Not okay!
