Sweetgreen’s 106-Gram Protein Bowl Is a Last-Ditch Effort to Save the Dying Slop-Shop
You’re not imagining things; the protein business is booming.

Protein, like many foods before it, is having its moment in the spotlight. For Millennials, it was avocados and bacon; for Gen Z, it’s protein and more protein. You can find it in energy drinks and Starbucks lattes. If you’d prefer to suck it down, there are protein pouches and powders, such as Huel; though, I should warn you, many of these powders contain lead, as reported by Consumer Reports.
Given that protein is so popular, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the fast casual slop bowl restaurant, Sweetgreen, has added a new item to its menu – a bowl with a staggering 106 grams of protein.

According to nutritionists at the Mayo Clinic, the average person should consume roughly “0.8 grams [of protein] per kilogram of body weight” a day to maintain a healthy diet. This amounts to 60 grams of protein per day for someone who weighs 165 pounds. For the average American, that number is somewhere between 80 and 90 grams of protein a day.
So why is Sweetgreen selling a slop bowl with more than the daily recommended amount of protein? Simple, because it’s a last-ditch effort to save a Wall Street darling that has failed to find its market. The company’s stock has declined 80% for the year, and recently hit a new all-time low of just $6.05. In January, the stock was trading for $40 a share.
Grym bros, you are Sweetgreen’s only hope.
