Tea App Founder Got the Idea After His Mom Kept Matching With Criminals on Dating Apps

People seem to have lots of opinions about the new Tea app.

I don’t subscribe to the idea that “dating is worse today than it’s ever been.” It’s a cop-out that helps people to feel good about themselves while painting everyone else as “bad.”

That isn’t to say there aren’t bad people out there — there are plenty — but that doesn’t mean dating as a whole is a “lost cause.”

That said, many people do feel this way, especially women, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that the most popular app in the App Store right now is a dating-focused one for women called Tea, which allows them to rate and share information on men.

This isn’t a new phenomenon by any stretch of the imagination. For years, women have worked to warn each other about dangerous and harmful men. On Facebook, you can find thousands of pages dedicated to exactly this, usually private groups named “Am I Dating the Same Guy [Insert City]” and so on.

But bros, before you get your pitchforks out or cue up Grok to build you a counter app, let’s take a look at how it came about.

After seeing his mother’s struggles with dating, often finding herself either catfished or straight up matching with criminals, Sean Cook, the founder of Tea, sought to make modern dating safer for her. For example, Tinder, Hinge and even Bumble are typically unable to fully verify the millions of men who use their platforms. So if you’re crying about an app that actually tries to solve these kinds of problems, maybe you’re the problem.

Besides, if you don’t think women are talking about you behind your back, I have some even worse news for you.
