Great news for people living at the equator who have always wanted to see auroras: A massive hole has opened up on our Sun, and it's ready to shower us with some absurdly fast winds.

Clocking in at roughly 18-20 Earth-s wide, this hole is set to cause some serious effects on our side of the solar system, sending 1.8 million MPH winds toward our planet by the end of the week as the Sun undergoes its 11-year cycle of flipping its magnetic fields.

While big holes are nothing new when it comes to the Sun – one the size of roughly 30 Earth-s is currently rotating out of view –  its position towards the equator and thus the trajectory of its astral fart straight towards us here on Earth has made it particularly notable, as Space Physics professor Mathew Owens explained.

"This one being at the equator means we're pretty much guaranteed to see some fast wind at Earth a couple of days after it rotates past central meridian," Owens, who teaches at the University of Reading, recently told Insider.

As such, he said, it’s almost certain we’ll be able to catch wind of its emissions … quite literally. So remember, when one hole closes, another one is very much open, eager and ready to shower us in its atmospheric gusts. Hot … and not just because it’s the Sun.
