For years, the video-game community has made jokes about how Mario is repeatedly “friend-zoned” by Peach. Now, Nintendo has come out and said that, well, yeah, of course he’s in the friend zone — Mario and Peach and just “good friends.”

According to a recent post in the Nintendo Today! App, “Princess Peach and Mario are good friends and help each other out whenever they can.” Feels pretty one-sided here, given how many castles Mario has had to visit to “help Peach out,” but again, per Nintendo, he’s just doing all that because Peach is a really good friend.

Also, they still kiss sometimes. You know how friends are!
