Waymo CEO Says Society Needs to Learn to Accept Robotaxis Running Them Over
In order for technology to progress, a few people need to become pancakes.

There are an increasing number of self-driving cars on the road. The problem is that we still haven’t worked out who’s responsible when a car with no driver breaks the law or hits someone. In California, for example, self-driving cars are currently allowed to simply break many traffic laws, as there’s no mechanism for penalizing cars without drivers (there is currently legislation being enacted to fix this).
For now, most of these violations are minor things, like making an incorrect turn or performing an illegal stop. However, as more of these cars hit the road, the likelihood that one will run someone over increases — and, to hear Waymo’s CEO tell it, that’s just something society is going to have to get used to.
In an interview, Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana was asked whether society will “accept a death potentially caused by a robot.” Her answer? “I think that society will.”
“We really worry as a company about those days. You know, we don’t say ‘whether.’ We say ‘when.’ And we plan for them,” she said of the possibility of one of her company’s cars running someone over.
Well … good to know they’re thinking about it, at least. Still, we’re gonna need to hear a little more “taking of responsibility” here!
