Death by 1000 News Breaks

I pretty much listen to the Bob and Tom radio show every morning as I drive to work. Even though I leave my house at different times and my commute is only 20 minutes, I consistently run into the local news break. The gravely voiced female DJ starts with the national news and guess which topic always goes first? That's right. It's our old friend Covid-19.

Her pack a day, Marlboro Red voice along with a dash of sorrow provides the days statistics as the words pour out of my average but adequate Honda Accord speakers. 'The positive case numbers are going up...there were another (insert alarming number here) deaths due to Covid-19. There was a spike here and an increase there.' Her tone gets a little more sad with each line she reads. Once she has fulfilled her daily requirement of projecting fear, she moves on to the local news.

Come on...I say why stop at Covid-19? Why should we only follow one cause of death? As long as we are going to beat this drum every day, let's quit playing a single snare and move on to a killer drum kit Neil Peart would have been proud to sit behind. Let's rattle off all the potential ways to assume room temperature. To kick the bucket. To take an eternal dirt nap. To kick the oxygen habit. Become a root inspector. Feed the worms.

Here are just a few of the other most popular ways to go based on 2019 statistics:

Heart Disease   - 1,794 per day
Cancer               - 1,643 per day
Diabetes            - 232   per day
Overdose           - 178   per day
Misc Accident    - 109   per day
Auto Accident    - 104   per day
Flu                      - 60    per day

I guess you can look at this one of 2 ways. Everyday you wake up not being one of these statistics is a good day to be alive. Another day to make good choices and memorable moments. Or, you can wait in fear of everything that will potentially place you into one of the categories. If you fall into the latter, your way of thinking may lead to another group I failed to mention before now.

Suicide       - 132 per day

Adios.
