Educators rock!

I'm not complaining about my job because I love it. But--and this is a big but--I recall an engineer complaining about his company saying "They want us to get advanced degrees, but they won't pay the tuition up front. They will pay only after we get the degree. How do they think young engineers can afford to do that?" I thought of throttling him. Teachers aren't "encouraged" to get advanced degrees; we are required to get 6 hours credit every five year to keep our licenses, and of course, those hours are at our expense. Some teachers get the six hours through staff development, but I always wanted university hours that I paid for myself. Usually, any teacher who studies for an advanced degree does so in the summer, and no, we don't work seven months. We work ten, but most teachers I know also work during the summer adjusting curricula, planning for new classes etc. I have a masters degree plus 64 university hours, and no, my degree is not in education; it is in English. At the moment, I am in Virginia Beach visiting for Thanksgiving and grading between 80 and 90 two and ½ page essays. Please don't insinuate that we teachers don't work hard. I may have to hunt you down and bring a crew to teepee your house.
