It’s hard enough to get kids to eat food in general, so this list had us wondering how ‘70s kids got any sustenance at all! And we could understand if the imaes of the recipes themselves looked appetizing in the cookbooks, but now we’re wondering how the parents of these ‘70s kids thought these looked yummy enough to try at home.
At least they were trying new things, right? We have to give them credit for that. Like, how many times can you have chicken, potatoes, and broccoli? ‘70s parents started venturing way out of their comfort zones in their very yellow kitchens, but today we found 13 dishes that got way too experimental. Some would say too experimental for a mad scientist’s laboratory.
1
Leftovers In Jell-O Molds
This basically used Jell-O as a trash can.
2
Tuna Noodle Casserole with Potato Chips
It was cream of mushroom soup, canned tuna, and egg noodles all baked up with crushed potato chips on top.
3
Ham and Banana Hollandaise
Bananas wrapped in ham, covered in hollandaise sauce, and baked.
4
Fondue with Port Wine Canned Cheese
Fondue was a massive deal in the ‘70s, and we have nothing against it in theory. The “port wine-infused canned cheese” part took it to an all-time low.
5
Jellied Beef Mold
Ground beef and olives molded into a loaf and chilled in gelatin. Your face scrunched in disgust while reading that, didn’t it?
6
Liver and Onions With Sour Cream
Minus the sour cream, liver and onions was actually a staple of the American diet for some reason.
7
Curried Fish in a Rice Ring
Trying to go “ethnic,” Betty Crocker threw some kumquats on a thick pool of curried fish.
8
Mock Apple Pie (made with Ritz Crackers)
This "apple" pie used no apples — just crackers, cinnamon, and sugar.
9
Cheeseburger Pie
A compressed pie of ground beef with "cheese topping" and ketchup.
10
Seafood Coquilles
This frozen seafood and condensed cream of shrimp soup pie was actually dubbed an "International Favorite!"
11
Tuna ‘N’ Waffles
Like the incredibly tasty “Chicken ‘N’ Waffles,” but, you know, just horrible.
12
Frank & Bean Bake
Beans mixed with mushroom spaghetti sauce topped with mini hotdogs. Yum.
13
Cat Food. Sorry, we meant "Deviled Ham Spread"
Canned ham puree mixed with mayo and spices, usually served on white bread. It does look (and smell) a lot like cat food.
