On Memorial Day in 1986, a bunch of people did their best to connect America.
Of all the outlandish cultural moments of the 1980s, Hands Across America may be the most wholesome. Organized by the same charity that did the "We Are the World" video from the year before, the goal was to create a continuous human chain across the continental U.S., in an effort to promote unity and awareness of the homeless crisis. They didn't quite pull it off - there were many gaps in rural areas, but it's still cool to see the effort.
Check out the lines of people who came out and (nearly) created a line that spanned from coast to coast.
