Of all the American sports, bowling seems like the least likely to have a renaissance, but that’s exactly what happened in the 1970s.
With the economy of the decade on a downturn, bowling alleys provided the perfect way to spend a Saturday. It was affordable, fun for the whole family, and maybe most importantly, they served beer. Companies and factory unions often had bowling teams, which spawned some veritable pros, and when ABC’s Pro Bowlers Tour hit the airwaves, suddenly bowling was one of the favorite pastimes of the country.
