16 Photos Of Journey Before You Knew Their Hits

The Journey of the 1970s was a very different band.

When you think of Journey, the first song that pops into your mind might be "Don’t Stop Believin’." But the Journey of the 1970s was a very different band. Steve Perry, the vocalist most strongly associated with the band, didn’t join until 1977. And before he was a member, the band’s radio-friendly pop sound was nowhere to be found.

Journey was formed in 1973 by Santana alumni Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie, Ross Valory of the Steve Miller Band, and George Tickner of Frumious Bandersnatch. For the first decade, Journey was a jazz fusion band, with a much more funky style than what they’d develop into in the 80s. Commercial would not be the word you’d use to describe them at all, but it was certainly on the horizon.

When Steve Perry joined the band, they switched sounds to what most people know them for today and became mega famous. Check out this gallery of the forgotten decade of Journey, both before Steve Perry joined and the interim years when he was their new vocalist and their sound began to shift.
