Almost every 16-year-old is able to drive a car, but somehow these members of society’s elite aren’t able to figure it out.

Almost every 16-year-old is able to drive a car, but somehow these members of society’s elite aren’t able to figure it out.

From movie stars to pop artists, these celebs either couldn’t pass their driving test, didn’t ever find it necessary to own a car, or are just so stinkin’ rich that they can afford someone to drive them wherever.

Some of the celebrities who can’t drive may surprise you. As you check out this list of 17 household names who need somebody else to help them leave their household, don’t be afraid to feel superior to these non-drivers. While some of them have legitimate reasons, others are altogether too rich and glamorous not to have mastered this basic skill.

Ricky Gervais
Ricky Gervais revealed that he couldn’t drive amid rumors that he would be the new host for the UK car show Top Gear. To shut down the rumors, Ricky said “I cannot even drive and I very rarely wear a jacket with jeans and brogues. So, I wouldn't fit in.”

Javier Bardem
Javier Bardem has never gotten his driver’s license. He says he is scared of cars, even more than planes. Despite this, he’s had to drive in a few of his roles, which he said took hours to learn how to do, just to drive down a small stretch of road. He told Time Magazine, “I don't have a driver's license. I don't like cars.”

Barbra Streisand
Barbra Streisand used to be a frequent driver, but stopped driving in 2018 and hasn’t since. She made the decision after failing her license renewal test three times, and then found herself turning the wrong way onto a highway exit ramp. Since then, she hasn’t been behind the wheel of a car.

J.K. Rowling also admitted to not being able to drive in order to shut down a rumor. A tour guide claimed that there was a specific parking spot in Edinburgh that Rowling used to park in while writing the books, and Rowling took to Twitter to say “I can't drive. Never used a parking meter in my life.”

Legendary journalist and activist Gloria Steinem never learned to drive. She said she kept putting off going downtown and getting her driver’s license, and it just never happened. She never really needed it living in New York City, so she just never learned.

Oasis rock star Noel Gallagher gave up on the idea of driving after failing his driver’s test several times. He does own some very extravagant cars, but he can’t drive them. Instead, he has a chauffeur drive them for him. This musician is confined to the passenger seat.

After the release of Olivia Rodrigo’s song “Driver’s License”, Cardi B took to Twitter to reveal that she did not have a driver’s license. The rapper tweeted “Just like that girl wrote a song about getting her drivers license Imma write a song about the struggle of not having a driver's license. I really wanted my McDonald's at 4am last night instead of today but I couldn't so I [fell] asleep hungry.”

The ex-Disney actress made a conscious choice not to get her license because of her fear of driving. She actually bought herself a car when she turned 18 and then quickly realized she had no desire to drive it.

Real Housewives reality star Teddi Mellencamp has intense driving anxiety and only drives very occasionally. On Instagram, she shared, “I've spent many years crying behind my steering wheel. But instead of concealing it, I'm sharing with the world; because while I may have a fear of driving, the fear is never going to drive me.” She joked that she’d love to have a full-time chauffeur one day.

Kate Beckinsale has attempted to get her driver’s license multiple times and failed every time. She relies on Uber or her daughter, who actually managed to get her license before her mom did. Kate said it used to be a cute thing and has grown embarrassing as she’s gotten older.

Carey Mulligan claims to be an excellent driver but can’t pass her road test in England. She’s failed the test five times over the years despite passing it easily in America. As she lives in England now, she can no longer drive herself around like she would be able to in the States. Ironically, one of her most famous movie roles is in a film called Drive.

This member of the world-famous K-pop group BTS has toured the world, spoken in front of the United Nations, and met with the President of the United States, but is unable to drive a car. I guess with all those achievements under your belt it’s hard to find time to take your driver’s test.

Mariah prefers life in the passenger seat, relying on chauffeurs to get around. The diva owns a fleet of luxury cars that she doesn’t drive herself. Ever since a minor car accident in 2009, she prefers not to get behind the wheel.

Tina Fey didn’t drive for most of her life, instead relying on the subway. I guess that makes some sense for someone who lived in New York City for so long. She said during COVID that she ended up buying her first car ever, craving independence with the subways closed down.

The late great Shemp Howard, one of the founding members of the Three Stooges, did not drive a car. Allegedly this decision came after he was involved in a car accident in California. His brother Moe claimed it was because he was a scaredy-cat, but some Stooge scholars disagree.
