18 Whip-It-Good '70s & '80s Pics Remembering Devo

Hopefully no problem comes along, but if it does, you'll know what to do.

We were surprised to find out that such a quirky new wave/synth-pop band with this sort of futuristic, eccentric aesthetic came from the most unlikely of places.

Akron, Ohio has always been known for its rubber manufacturing, so… Actually, wait. Were their red energy domes made of rubber? No, no. They were plastic. That may have been a subtle jab at their hometown, but this list isn’t about speculation.

Today, we’re diving into the very real phenomenon that was Devo. From 1973 to the present day, they taught us to critique consumerism, conformity, and the absurdity of modern life, but most importantly, they taught us to whip it. To whip it good. “It” being whatever issue you happen to be facing at the time.

To thank Devo for that great advice, here are 18 images from the first two of their now five-plus decade career.
