20 Times Forgetfulness Got the Better of People

We all forget things once in a while, but sometimes we really screw up and forget something important.

We all forget things once in a while, but sometimes we really screw up and forget something important.

At r/AskReddit we found stories of people's worst "oh shoot" moments, from people who really screwed up and forgot something important. The next time you think you screwed up, just think about how badly these people did.

"When you are finished with your final exam, bring it up front and turn it in, along with your term paper." "...Term ...paper?" u/kms2547

My mum and I loaded up the car and drove a long way to my sister's house for Christmas. We had packed all her cooking. We had forgotten the presents. u/mrlr

I left a bag of milk in my car for 5+ days in the middle of a 30c+ week and wondered what the smell was. Worst smell ever draining that. u/TroubledKiwi

Turned on the spigot in the barn to fill the water trough. Started cleaning stalls, turned the horses out. Got done, went in the house, went on about my day. Ate dinner, went to bed, got up the next morning. All of a sudden remembered I never turned the water off in the barn. Flooded the dirt floor barn, river running out the back door, massive water bill that month. u/pacingpilot

Drove two hours to the airport just to realize I forgot my ID on the kitchen table. Thankfully it was a domestic flight, they felt bad for me and let me on anyway. u/spacecat-on-mars

I was playing Forza, the racing game. The "bots" in single player races use the names/cars of your friends in your friend list. Saw my buddy's name next to me on the starting line, hadn't talked to him for a while, so I gave him a call. Number was disconnected, and I realized I forgot he died the year prior. u/MyNameIsRay

My wife loves the All America Rejects and they were putting on a free concert 2 weeks ago in a town a few minutes away. Well we somehow got the dates mixed up and ended up missing it by a week. Had a babysitter come over and everything so when we got to the venue and found it empty we realized our **** up and went home. Still paid the babysitter for the full night and we played Mario Kart instead. u/itsfish20

I spent about 6 months working with a team on a government proposal for funding to build a nursing home. I can't tell you how much effort was spent on it. We submit and get rejected almost immediately. One of the criteria was that you had to have this specific engineering firm basically thumbs up all the work you got your own architects/engineers to do. It was very specific. And the guy in charge of that just forgot to do it. u/Billbapaparazzi

I was out on a road trip one summer Saturday evening. Stopped for fuel, snacks and to check my phone. I had like 5 missed calls from different friends and a bunch of texts. Hit me like a sack of hammers, "**** I forgot the wedding was today." Good friend was getting married. Like I'd bought a dress to go. Had made arrangements with a friend to share a hotel room. Was really looking forward to it. Somehow switched the weekends in my head. Even had touched base with friends the week leading up to it. Did some highly illegal motorcycling and got there by the time the reception was starting. Looked like a hot mess and my hair was an absolute disaster but I still had fun. u/litteredhoodlum

Years ago, before cell phones, my mom, dad and myself (8yrs old) were driving to pick my brother up from camp which was several hours out in the country. We stopped for gas and dad agreed to let me sit in the front as he planned on napping in the back. We get gas and all drive off. Over an hour later my mom asks my dad a question and gets no response. We both turn around to an empty back seat. u/Task-Vast

Sophomore year of college I took Astronomy. It was a self-paced class, so you went into their computer lab and had 2 tries/day per unit, and sign up for the labs when you have time. It was across campus and I figured, "Eh, I'll get around to it next week." Two months pass and I'm working on a paper for another class and I suddenly realize I've completely forgotten about Astronomy. My adrenal gland was kind enough to dump its contents then and there. Thus begins my mid October mad scramble to cram an entire course into a few weeks. Next year will be my 20th anniversary of graduation and I still have nightmares about similarly missing a class. u/Exctmonk

I was taking care of my sister's cats (6) while she was out of the country. I was supposed to feed them breakfast, supper, and clean their boxes every day. I usually did it before and after work. One of her cats needed a twice per day medication. One night, I had to work really late. I was exhausted and went home and fell asleep on the sofa. I woke up around 2am. I realized I had forgotten to check on the cats! I drove across town and did my kitty aunt duties in the middle of the night. u/vpblackheart

Working as an operating theatre orderly at a hospital in the early 90’s I went for breakfast and forgot that I was supposed to take a bone that had just arrived via courier to a surgeon who had just prepped the patient for surgery. u/DatabaseContent8664

My brother and I were driving to our dad’s funeral. He wakes up from a dead sleep and shouts “****!”. He looks at me and says “I forgot dad’s ashes at home…”. Four states away. After he calmed down I had them overnighted and everything turned out alright. He was pretty upset for a couple hours though. And now we have the joke for the rest of our lives that dad was even late for his own funeral. I consider it a good memory. u/thefillorian

When I was kid my Grandma called and I picked up the phone. She asked to speak with my mom, and I said "OK, I'll get her." Then I got distracted and forgot. It must have been like an hour or two later when my mom noticed the phone was off the hook. She picked it up and said "Hello?" My poor grandma was still patiently waiting on the other end. Maybe not the biggest oops, but it still sticks in my mind for some reason so many years later. u/pythonwarg

Recently, was boiling a pretty large pot of cut potatoes in order to make mashed potatoes for a potluck. I got busy cleaning house and forgot them. For over an hour. Hours even? There were no potatoes left! They had boiled away to nothing! It was just starchy water. u/lazyMarthaStewart
