In 1920s America, it was illegal to have a good time.
After years of campaigning by various religious groups in the U.S., the Eighteenth Amendment was passed in 1920, which banned the sale of alcohol. The streets were literally flooded with alcohol that was illegal to consume. Soon after this, underground operations to provide alcohol to people sprang up, and the decade was defined by secret speakeasies, booze-running crime organizations, and incredibly clever and elaborate ways to disguise consumption of the drink.
