As Americans expanded west in the mid to late 1800s, they did so in search of wealth, freedom, and opportunity. Instead they found poverty, hardship, and lots of crime. That's what tends to happen when you put a bunch of rejects together with virtually nothing in the way of organized government.
The wild west produced a cast of memorable characters too wide for even the most ambitious HBO showrunner, but we wanted to highlight a few of them for your reading pleasure.

Wyatt Earp
A famous wild west lawman, who killed three outlaws at the O.K. Corral shootout and worked in multiple cities.

Billy the Kid
Perhaps the wild west’s most infamous outlaw, Henry McCarty was linked to nine murders and multiple crimes when he was killed. However, evidence for his wrongdoings is spotty at best.

Wild Bill Hickok
An all encompassing lawman, gunman, gambler, vigilante, and more. Hickok was killed in a casino shootout in 1876, but tall tales of his exploits remain.
