NASCAR was founded in 1948, before cars got awesome. Sure, many historians or car enthusiasts may disagree with that assertion but just look at these things. They don’t look like they’re breaking a top speed of 50 miles per hour. Nevertheless, these race cars managed to draw huge audiences, build a nationwide empire, and even impressively pile up.
Seriously, all I can think of when I look at most of these cars is the Three Stooges. These NASCAR clunkers look like vehicles that Moe, Larry, and Curly would be veering all over the road in. Keep that image in mind as you check out these vintage photos of early NASCAR events filled with cars that look like they’d be better for running errands than zooming around a track.
