Art is a mysterious process, and the traits of a great artist can be even more so. Many artists suffer from mood swings, extreme anxiety, or trauma, and their grappling with these difficulties through art is what often makes it great. But sometimes, artists are dealing with something far more serious, and that can make for some seriously cool and terrifying art.

There is a pretty famous self-portrait from William Utermohlen, who kept working as his dementia progressed, and the cat painting from Louis Wain who painted as schizophrenia slowly took hold. 

Then there are the people whose entire identity as an artist is wrapped up in their wild minds, like Willem De Kooning and Richard Dadd. The massive, psychosexual tapestries made by Marian Henel were created during his decades-long stay in a mental hospital. There are even contemporary artists posting on Reddit, using their unique mental state for crazy art and a crazy amount of upvotes.
