In most action movies, the final act takes place in some evil lair that the lead guy has to single-handedly invade and take down. These places always look cartoonishly evil and cool, and obviously couldn’t exist in the real world. Or, at least that’s what we thought until we found some government research centers and military bases.

These places are the real-life dwellings of Bond villains. The Indian Arctic Research Center is a sharp, chrome box with a sphere, and it’s even built atop an eerie black stone, like Darth Vader’s castle. The Swedish Naval Base and Crimea Submarine Base both look like the Team Aqua hideout from Pokemon. And of course, abandoned Soviet bases have that particular villainous flare that reminds you of, well, any movie where the Russians are the villains.

These places are incredibly cool, scary, and it’s honestly insane that they exist in real life.
