While it'd be nice for everyone to wake up and go about their lives in perfect harmony, we live in a human society, and humans aren't perfect. 

In fact, most of humanity's problems are caused by humans and life is made more difficult the more of them you have to be around every single day. And while we have done very little to create systems to effectively circumnavigate the issue, the situation remains that many of us have little regard for society at large. Surprise, surprise, humans are selfish.
