Brian Wilson, The Beach Boys front man and world famous singer-songwriter, passed away today at the age of 82. 

"We are heartbroken to announced that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away," Wilson's family wrote in a message to fans. 

Although they did not provide a cause of death, Wilson has been battling dementia since at least last year. 

Often cited as the founder of California Rock, Wilson's unique sound with both the Beach Boys and as a record producer changed the songwriting and pop music world, earning him and the group over 100 million record sales worldwide. 

He will be remembered for his contributions to music and his significant struggles with mental health and substance abuse issues, both of which he battled valiantly throughout much of his life.
