Sometimes expensive things are worth the price. Sometimes they're not.
The same applies to cars, and automakers go to great lengths to prove their luxury offerings are the best of the best. But that's just not always the case.
Here are 15 seriously expensive cars with unforgivable problems, superior alternatives, and agonizing depreciation.
1
Range Rover SV
At $278,000, Rang Rover’s most expensive trim costs a PRETTY penny. Couple that with Range Rover’s spotty reliability and you have yourself a poor purchase. (But at that price, whoever bought it probably has other options to choose from.)
2
Ford Bronco Raptor
For up to $100,000 you wind up with a car that’s unreliable, impractical, and obnoxious.
3
Infiniti QX80
For a price approaching $90,000, you can get a souped-up Nissan.
4
Lucid Air Sapphire
I’m all for Tesla competitors, but at $327,000 the Sapphire is an irrational purchase. Just get a Porsche Taycan for a third of the price.
5
Jeep Grand Wagoneer
For over $100,000 you get an unreliable and obnoxiously massive Stellantis product.
6
Dodge Hornet
Compared to many other Stellantis products, the Hornet is a fun little SUV. Except it costs $50,000 while trying to compete with compacts that cost under $30,000. No wonder there are thousands of them all over dealer lots.
7
Maserati Gran Tourismo
For $150,000 you can buy a car that goes for $30,000 on the used market. Why do they depreciate so heavily? Because they’re less reliable than your ex.
8
Maserati Ghibli
Potentially over $150,000, the Ghibli is a horrible deal for the same reasons as the Gran Tourismo. There’s no reason to buy one of these new.
9
Maserati Levante
I don’t need to say anything more about Maserati until Stellantis sorts themselves out.
10
GMC Yukon Denali
When you’re spending $100,000 on a massive SUV, why get the GMC?
11
Jaguar I-Pace
This $75,000 practical electric Jaguar was supposed to save the company. Instead, the boring and unreliable SUV put them out of the market, with its only claim to fame being that it’s the official car of Waymo.
12
Jaguar F-TYPE
The R75 Coupe starts at $113,000. You can also buy a used F-TYPE for $25,000. These depreciate hard because of their poor reliability and build quality. But that engine does sound so good.
13
Fisker Ocean
By all accounts the Fisker Ocean is a decent compact luxury SUV. But those who bought them new at $60,000 are in a world of trouble, seeing as Fisker is now bankrupt and the cars are selling for $20,000. Additionally, good luck servicing a complex electric vehicle at your local garage now that there are no more Fisker dealers to do it for you.
14
Lincoln Navigator
At around $100,000, you’re spending quite a bit of money on an extra-large Ford. There are better options.
15
Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio
As Top Gear once said, in an Alfa Romeo it’s not a matter of when you arrive, but if you arrive. For over $85,000 that’s not acceptable.
