Photos of the Unsupervised World of Being a Gen X Kid

Before parenting got a rebrand. When the only “safety net” was grass.

By Micaela Montaña

Published 2 months ago in Feels

Before smartphones, helicopter parents, and GPS trackers, there was us: the Gen X kids, raised by the glow of the TV and the sound of a slamming screen door. We ruled the streets 'til the streetlights came on, survived bike crashes with zero helmets, and knew how to fix a cassette tape with just a pencil and pure grit.

These photos capture that gloriously reckless, wonderfully weird world we grew up in: when our only supervision was the occasional “Be home by dark!” echoing from a kitchen window. This slideshow is a time machine to backyard mayhem, latchkey adventures, and the chaotic charm of total freedom.

This is the last generation that truly raised itself. Click through, but be warned: nostalgia hits harder than a big wheel on gravel.
