"Wave" is a large-scale installation conceived by artist Annette Thas for this year's Sculpture by the Sea event at Cottesloe beach in Perth, Australia -
2.
Towering over 9 feet above the surface of Cottesloe beach, over 12 feet wide, those seated beneath the waves expanse are completely enveloped by its length. -
3.
The extraordinary sculpture was created by tying thousands of blonde Barbie dolls to an aluminium frame in the shape of a giant wave, under which beach goers were able to catch some shade. -
4.
Inspired by her own childhood memories and emotional reminders of her youth, Thas wanted to find a way to universally represent the precious and short period of time through the piece. using an icon of play, whimsy and carefree adolescent amusement, thas worked with the barbie doll, weaving thousands of plastic toys together into an overwhelming, free-standing composition. -

Thas posted notices online and found dolls at thrift stores and secondhand shops. -

"The Barbies are used to convey messages" Thas says, "That's why I decided to use blonde Barbie dolls. The sculpture is about genetic modification and the tyranny of the ideal image of beauty".
