What 1990s High School Looked Like If You Weren't Cool

Let’s relive the awkward glory.

By Micaela Montaña

Before “social awkwardness” had a hashtag and before revenge-of-the-nerds was a Netflix genre, there were the rest of us: the uncool, the unnoticed, the tragically enthusiastic. High school in the '90s wasn’t all flannel, Walkmans, and movie-makeover montages. Nope. For many of us, it was acne, off-brand sneakers, and a solid C+ in gym.

While the cool kids were busy brooding in chokers and pretending not to care, we were out there actually not fitting in. But guess what? We had the last laugh (and probably the first computer).

This slideshow is a love letter to every awkward school photo, every forced group project, every Friday night spent rewinding Blockbuster tapes solo. So if you ever asked “Did I peak in high school?” and heard a soft “...no” echo back, this one's for you.
