What Going Cross Country Was Like Before JFK and LAX

Back when roadtrip fun was nature and being with your loved ones.

By Micaela Montaña

Before airports turned into stress factories with carpeting, going cross-country meant piling into a car that shook like a washing machine and hoping the map didn’t lie. The open road was a personality test. Snacks were whatever you made at home, and every mile felt like a tiny victory over boredom.

Families endured together: windows down, hair whipping like it had dreams of its own. You learned patience, geography, and which relative snored loudest. Rest stops were mysteries, camping was rough, and the scenery felt endless in the best way. It was adventure without Wi-Fi, courage without seat warmers, freedom without a flight attendant asking you to buckle anything.

These photos take you back to that magic: the long roads, the long jokes, the long silences, the long everything. Buckle up, vintage America is ready for one more ride.
