Spending a million dollars only to have a windstorm rip it away two years later.

Europeans love to make fun of American homes for being made not out of stone, but wood. This actually makes more sense than some might think; wood is pretty abundant in the United States, and we can much more easily and cost-effectively frame a house with wood than any other material.

That said, if something is cheap, we’re going to try to keep finding ways to make it cheaper until it kills us. God bless America!

Nowhere is this clearer than housing. While a wood structure of old could last for several lifetimes, the average modern house is only designed to stay around for about 40 to 60 years.

This is even the case for expensive projects. As this contractor shows, just because you paid over $800k to get your house built, that doesn’t mean that the people doing it did a good job.
