Creators of McDonald’s Terrible-Looking AI-Generated Ad Insist They Worked Really, Really Hard On It

“AI didn't make' McDonald's Christmas Ad. We Did,” said the CEO of the company that just asked a computer to make the ad for them.

Recently, McDonald’s Netherlands debuted a new advertisement that was entirely generated by artificial intelligence. The reaction was, naturally, bad — people pointed out the numerous inconsistencies in the ad, internet users decried just how hazy and poor everything looked, and the company behind it ended up turning off comments on their YouTube channel.

Who thought this was a good idea? Well, two groups: a US-based ad agency TBWA and an AI-focused production company called The Sweetshop. Now that the ad is out and looks like a rat’s behind, they’ve felt the need to justify their phony-baloney jobs.

In a statement, The Sweetshop CEO Melanie Bridge claimed that they “hardly slept” because they were working so hard on the ad. This “work” included “writing AI prompts and refining the shots.” See, usually when people “work” on something, they’re not just writing “make it more Christmas-y” then waiting for a computer to do everything for them.

Hopefully, this will be another signal to companies that no one wants this.
