Here’s What It’s Like to Walk a Circus’ ‘Wheel of Death’

Most people would avoid something called the “Wheel of Death,” but not circus performers!

Circus performers aren’t exactly known for their good judgement. For as long as the circus has existed, it’s been associated with idiocy, oddity and venereal disease. Now, of course, things are a little bit different — but many of the stunts that debuted in these early, stupid times are still being carried out to this day!


Take, for example, the “Wheel of Death.” This is a giant, rotating structure with two or more open-sided “wheels” on the side of it. Performers will run on top of, and around, these wheels, often engaging with the crowd and doing other gags while they’re at it.
