Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes one to gradually lose the motor neurons that cause voluntary muscle contraction. This means that people with ALS gradually lose control over much of their body’s functions, and over time, this can lead to death.

Right now, treatment basically only involves slowing the progression of the disorder, as there’s no known cure. Even with treatment, however, things can move quickly. To demonstrate, this man with ALS took a video one year apart to show just how much his body had changed.
