According to the NFL, there’s no proof that smelling salts are safe. Same goes for football itself, but we’re not getting rid of that.

The NFL has announced that smelling salts are now banned. According to the league, the ban is occurring for two reasons: First, they can’t prove that they actually work, and second, if they *do* work, they’re probably covering up concussion symptoms.
Players have had mixed-to-negative responses to this. Some have claimed that they use smelling salts in normal play and are seeking a middle ground with the league; others are confused about how smelling salts are apparently more dangerous than the sport itself (though, in fairness, these players are probably still a bit hazy after their most recent concussion).
