Inside the German Competition Where They Fill Their Noses With As Much Tobacco As Possible

It’s a weird country.

When was the last time you saw someone using snuff? For Americans, the answer very well might be “never.” While we don’t mind shoving stuff up our noses, we usually save that hole for harder drugs, not something as lowly as nicotine. That’s the sort of thing we’ll just shove in our lips or vape into our lungs!

In Germany, however, snuff tobacco is still relatively popular. It’s so popular, in fact, that the country has its own snuff tobacco competition, where people are given 60 seconds to stuff 5 grams of tobacco up their noses. For those who don’t use the metric system, this is, well, a fair bit of tobacco.

They must then keep it in their nose while their hands and snuff packages are inspected. All snuff that didn’t make it into their nose is deducted from their total — and the one who is the closest to having 5 grams of tobacco in their nose wins.

Well, wins the competition. Wins at life? Absolutely not.
