Is Daylight Savings Time Causing People to Injure Themselves?

The clocks changed over the weekend — and some people say the move has an injury count.

Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez recently posted a confusing video in which she claimed that her son suffered a nose injury because of the Daylight Savings Time switch.

“Thank you Daylight Savings Time, for this annual rug pull,” she said. While she didn’t explicitly say how it happened, she mentioned “tired kids bumping into [expletive],” so it’s safe to assume her kid was a little sleepy from the time change, woke up, then banged his face into a wall or something.

But is that really widespread?

It turns out the answer is pretty unambiguously “yes.” Daylight savings time has always been a stupid idea, but it’s especially dumb in the modern era — not only because it’s wholly unnecessary, but because we now have a lot of data to show how dangerous it can be.

For example, hospital admissions for heart attacks rise sharply after clocks are set forward, with a 24% increase reported in the U.S. and similar rises found in Sweden, Croatia, Germany, Brazil, Finland and Mexico.

Not only that, but it just makes everyone grumpy. A 2020 study showed that the Daylight Savings transition worsens mood disorders, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. Road safety is affected as well — fatal car accidents increase by about 6% in the weeks following the change, which researchers speculate is due to widespread sleep deprivation.

So, if your kid is a little dopey this week, it might just be the time change. Or, your kid’s an idiot.
