Malfunctioning Drone Display Causes Fireballs to Fall From the Sky

Drone shows are safer than firework shows… right?

After centuries of firework displays, modern people are coming around to the idea that “shooting literal fire into the sky” probably isn’t the best idea. Not only is it loud and pollutive, but it can also be dangerous, especially if one of those fireworks goes in a direction it’s not supposed to.

Thankfully, there’s a safer alternative to fireworks: drone shows. Instead of shooting fire into the sky, we launch light-up drones and have them do choreographed displays amongst the clouds.

“How are we going to power these drones?” With batteries, of course. “But can’t those batteries explode?” Uh… oh no!

It turns out, those batteries *can* explode — and did over the weekend. At a show in China, weather conditions caused dozens of drones to fall out of the sky and, well, blow up and start fires.

No one was injured, but this feels like a kink that needs to be worked out!
