A 61-year-old Long Island man has died after he was sucked into an MRI machine. According to the Nassau County Police Department, the man entered the MRI room “without permission,” while wearing a 20-pound chain around his neck.

The man’s wife, who was getting an MRI done on her knee, called him into the room to help her after her scan, which is when he was sucked into the machine. She has since addressed the media about the incident, recalling her husband’s final moments, explaining, “He waved goodbye to me and then his whole body went limp.”

Healthcare providers are using the incident to remind the public that MRI machines use powerful magnets to create images and that anyone entering an MRI room should remove all metal objects from their person.
