As it typically does, the internet was ripe with speculation, explanations, conspiracy theorists, and armchair scientists offering their insight. The phenomenon was later revealed to be arrays of red LED lights being used by fishing trawlers to attract a specific type of fish. These extremely high powered lights can be seen from space according to one of the experts interviewed during the news segment.
