Oh Shit, Mount Etna Just Blew Up

Sicily’s Mount Etna had a massive eruption early this morning, sending a plume of hot gases, ash and rock several kilometers high and producing explosions that were audible for miles around.
This eruption appears to be producing a pyroclastic flow, which occurs when volcanic rock, ash and hot gasses surge from volcanos. This is, to put it simply, not a good thing — which is why a lot of people are currently leaving the area and flights are being diverted to avoid the smoke and ash.
The potential for damage is still being assessed, but the ash
