OpenAI’s New Video Generator Still Doesn’t Understand Physics, Keeps Making Hilarious Screw-Ups

This “new technology” doesn’t seem a whole lot better than the old one.

When A.I.-generated video first came out, we were all pretty amazed by the results — and terrified about its implications.

Now, OpenAI has released its latest version of its video generator Sora. While some parts about it are definitely impressive, other parts make you realize the tech really, really isn’t there yet.

For example, X user Colin Fraser recently documented a series of screw-ups he was able to make using the software. A simple prompt — asking the generator to create a video of a man opening a car door, getting out, closing the door, then walking out of the frame — generated a monstrosity in which a man closed a car on his own leg, then teleported through his front windshield.

In another video, a bartender pours a glass, only for liquid to somehow hang outside of the glass before becoming an orb floating on the rim. Also, the bartender’s finger somehow migrates to the center of his hand.

Mistakes like these abound. A prompt asking someone to blow out birthday candles results in no blown-out candles. A magician disappears, then counts down as though he hasn’t disappeared yet. Again, even easy prompts like “a man gets out of a car” creates a video in which a man slams a car door into his neck and then announces that “It feels good to be out here.”

In short, the tech is impressive, but it’s not really improving. Maybe if they just increase our power bill a bit more it’ll all get better!
