People Think They Can Make ‘Healthy Skittles’ By Washing Off the Dye

This is not what makes Skittles bad for you.

Just so we’re all on the same page: When a doctor tells you that you shouldn’t give your kid candy, it’s because candy is filled with many things that are bad for children. For example, there’s a lot of sugar in candy and, depending on the treat, a substantial amount of fat. And, yes, there’s also artificial dyes that may or may not be dangerous. Get rid of one of these things, and you’ll still have the other parts to deal with.

Got it? Good, because these TikTokers sure don’t.

For some reason, there’s a growing TikTok trend of people washing the “artificial dye” off of Skittles. Never mind that there’s certainly dye *in* the candy that you can’t wash off, or that the candy is definitely unhealthy with or without the dye — I watched a YouTube video about Red Dye 40, and now I need all my food to be crystal white!

Are some of these videos rage bait? Of course, we’re only *kind of* stupid here. But are some people taking this seriously? Absolutely, and for that reason, I hang my head in shame.
