Russia’s New Scam Is ‘Marrying Soldiers Right Before They Die’

Get in, they get out, you get paid.

The people of Russia aren’t having the best time right now. While their economy is doing fairly well all things considered, many of the international sanctions have made it difficult for the average Russian to do all the things they were accustomed to doing. As a result, many are looking for ways to earn a few additional bucks.

This is where a new (alleged) scam comes in.

During a podcast, a Russian estate agent claimed that there’s a new practice in Russia: marrying men right before they go off to war, collecting the generous benefits the government gives when a soldier dies, buying property, rinsing, then repeating.

While the woman being interviewed has since claimed it was simply “black humor,” one can see how this might be appealing. The Russian government can offer over 8 million Rubles to the families of soldiers who have died in combat, which amounts to around $95,000 USD. Do this a few times, and you could have a pretty healthy bank account — all at the grim cost of losing several husbands.

Personally, I’d just go for “getting a job.” But maybe that’s just me!
