‘Shrekking’ Is the New Term for Dating Someone Uglier Than You
Modern dating on the apps is broken.

The Big Three — Tinder, Hinge and Bumble — are all struggling to both make money and keep their customers happy.
The problem is that all the “hot” people are paywalled behind Roses on Hinge, are nonexistent on Tinder and who cares about Bumble? Besides, the really hot people aren’t even on public dating apps, opting for invite-only platforms like Raya, which currently has a wait list of 2.5 million people.
And so, if you talk to singles these days, most of them relate dating to a war zone, uttering things like, “Getting a girlfriend/boyfriend in 2025 was like catching the last chopper out of Vietnam.”
What does that leave for the rest of us who are too ugly to make the cut — other than each other, of course?
Well, apparently, it’s a great time to be an eyesore as the new trend in dating is called: “shreking.”
Shrekking, which obviously borrows its name from the movie Shrek, is when you date someone who you think is uglier than you in the hope that they’ll worship the ground you walk on. Just like how Fiona takes a chance on Shrek, despite him being an ogre. Basically, singles are now lowering their standards in their quest for love.
The funny part is, in Shrek, Fiona turns out to be an ogre too.
