Tesla Influencers Tried Elon Musk’s Recommended ‘Self-Driving Coast-to-Coast Road Trip’ and Crashed Before They Even Left the State

Looks like there are a few kinks that still need to be ironed out.

Every year, Elon Musk promises that Tesla vehicles will become able to completely drive themselves within the next year. This isn’t even really an exaggeration — Musk’s lies about his cars’ capabilities are so common that they have their own Wikipedia page!

So, the cars can’t completely drive themselves, at least not fully. But they can still do a decent amount of driving, which is admittedly impressive. In fact, it almost feels like we’re getting close to having a car be able to drive itself across the country (something Musk said his cars would be able to do by 2018).

However, if you were thinking about actually trying this, I would suggest you don’t. That’s because two people did — and immediately crashed their car.

Basically, two Tesla shareholders/influencers decided to see how far the technology had progressed by attempting to drive across the country using as much Full Self Driving as possible.

While they were still in California, they encountered a piece of metal debris on the road. Although they had plenty of time to avoid the debris, the self-driving decided to plow right through it — resulting in a broken sway bar bracket, damaged suspension components and a whole lot of warnings being played in the interior of the car.

For those who are curious, that means they only made it about 2 percent of the way through their journey before the car offed itself.

I’m going to say that the technology still isn’t quite there.
