The Hot New TikTok Dance Trend? For Some Reason, Line Dancing

Instead of the fun, hip-hop inspired dances we’ve been doing, why don’t we do the dumbest dance imaginable?

Europeans love to accuse Americans of not having culture. While this isn’t true, it’s an unfortunate fact that many things tied to American-ness are kinda stupid and lame.

Case in point: line dancing. Despite looking more like a method for teaching feral children to walk than an actual dance, “line dancing” has stuck around in the American psyche — partially because conservative groups pressured schools to include it in their curriculum so kids wouldn’t be tempted by jazz music (that, unbelievably, is true).

No matter how dumb it looks, it’s popular — and now, it’s getting even more popular thanks in part to both TikTok and the rise of country-inspired music. As more people find themselves listening to music inspired by country, including everything from Morgan Wallen to Wednesday, they’re also, according to NBC News, getting into other parts of the country lifestyle — specifically, line dancing, which has seen a massive increase in popularity.

Will it stick around? Probably not; we all remember how the swing revival ended. But, for the time being, at least it’s another thing to do while striking out with your Hinge date.
